It may be called Pixels, but the first thing the visual effects team needed to do when creating a series of arcade game characters that attack Earth was…ignore the pixels. The characters, Pac-Man and Donkey Kong among them, had to inhabit the screen and be more than just 2D cut-outs. So instead they became voxels, able to exist in three-dimensional space. But that approach raised several questions. How do you make and animate a voxelized character? How do they emit light? And how do you, as Earth fights back, destroy them?
