THE SYNOPSIS

The Electric State, inspired by Simon Stålenhag's 2018 graphic novel and brought to life by Netflix and the Russo Brothers, follows an orphan named Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown) on a journey through a retro-futuristic, post-robot-uprising America. Digital Domain, led by VFX Supervisor Joel Behrens, played a central role in shaping the film’s visual identity, contributing over 850 shots and developing nearly 480 assets, including 61 uniquely designed robots. Collaborating with key creatives like Production VFX Supervisor Matthew Butler and designer Dennis Gassner, the team brought to life memorable robot characters such as Cosmo, Herman, Mr. Peanut, and the Marshall, blending 1990s aesthetics with futuristic detail. Their focus on realism and emotional resonance in character animation, supported by extensive research into robotics and motion studies, helped ground the film's sci-fi elements in believability.

The robot characters were carefully designed to reflect their personalities and narrative roles, with standout efforts including Cosmo’s non-verbal expressiveness, Herman’s CRT-screen-based facial expressions, and Mr. Peanut’s charmingly animatronic style. The animation team balanced technical precision with emotional storytelling, relying on real-time motion capture and sophisticated rigging systems. Digital Domain’s work extended beyond character animation to full-environment builds and major set pieces, such as the Haunted Amusement Park, the robot-populated Mall Sequence, and the Exclusion Zone desert. They also handled extensive previsualization and techvis for complex sequences like the End Battle, ensuring the film's dynamic flow and pacing. Overall, Digital Domain’s ambitious contributions were instrumental in realizing the film’s richly detailed world and emotionally compelling robotic cast.
