Thor

Directed by: Kenneth Branagh

Overview

For Marvel’s epic adventure, Digital Domain gave Thor an icy environment to conquer and frosty beasts to vanquish. Under the guidance of VFX supervisor Kelly Port, Digital Domain teams in Vancouver and Venice created digital characters, creatures and environments for 340 shots. Digital Domain provided on-set supervision and created an unforgiving ice-and-rock environment for the planet Jotunheim, and the massive battle with Frost Giants that takes place there — a seamless blend of CG characters and live action footage of actors in costume. Digital Domain also worked closely with Marvel to develop the look of the Frost Beast, fully animate the fierce hybrid creature and enable it to interact realistically with its live action foes and CG environment.

Character

From robots to creatures to digital humans, Digital Domain has created a broad cast of characters and brought them to life through pioneering processes and serious artistry. Our extensive and growing family of characters can be seen in the Transformers movies, Thor, Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and spots for Gears of War, Halo, Honda and many more.

Environments

Applying the best of 2D and 3D, Digital Domain creates complete digital surroundings in which characters, vehicles and objects thrive and interact. We generate locations that don't exist, like the world of TRON: Legacy and Thor’s Jotunheim, places created only to be destroyed, like LA in 2012, and LA/NYC in The Day After Tomorrow; and we re-create places that once existed, like WWII Mt. Suribachi in Flags of Our Fathers and 1970’s San Francisco in Zodiac.

Compositing

The seamless integration of visual elements is at the heart of visual effects, and Digital Domain has been recognized with awards both for our artistry and for our in-house developed compositing and tracking software. Whether the effects are invisible, as in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Flags of Our Fathers and Cinderella Man, fantastic, as in TRON: Legacy, and Thor, or mind-bending, as in 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow, they’re always smooth.
