2012

Directed by: Roland Emmerich

Overview

Digital Domain spent a year constructing a digital Los Angeles for director Roland Emmerich to tear down in the 2009 global cataclysm from Sony Pictures. VFX supervisor Mohen Leo led Digital Domain in creating the monumental L.A. sequence that featured destruction on both a massive and intimate scale. By developing a custom destruction system (called DROP) that enabled incredibly complex simulations Digital Domain set a new standard in ‘directed destruction’ with scale-appropriate nuances. In the scene Digital Domain collapses nearly 100 CG buildings with assorted debris, furniture and 32,000 shattering windows; and miles of rock walls, cars and signs — with the dynamics extending right down to simulated shaking of leaves on CG trees.
